Dominica

Dominica is located in the northeastern part of the Lesser Antilles of East Caribbean, it faces the Atlantic Ocean in the east and neighbors the Caribbean Sea in the west. It is an island country with an area of only 751 square kilometers. Its people are mainly black and black-and-white-mixed.

Its aboriginal people are the Arawaks and the Caribbean coming from the South American Indian tribes. In 1493 Columbus came to the island. Dominica is the last island of the Caribbean to become a colony of Europe, and the local Indians are fighting quite fiercely. In 1763 "Treaty of Paris" placed the island under the British and the island was twice occupied by France then. In 1805 the French occupiers set fire on Rooseau, and the British paid 8000 pounds "ransom" and then formally occupied Dominica. It joined the West Indies in 1958. In 1967 the internal autonomy came into force. On November 3, 1978 it became independent. It is a member of the Commonwealth.
